Guide to the Oculus
All strategy and ability discussion in this guide discuss the heroic version of the Oculus. Beyond the cut below you will find simple strategies for each of the bosses in the Oculus, as well as maps to help you find your way through the environment.
Band of Variance
Drakos the Interrogator is the first boss in the Oculus, coming just after the bridge of many whelps. Despite what the visuals of his encounter suggest, the fight doesn’t require a very heavy amount of movement or coordination.
His abilities are as follows:
* Magic Pull: Teleports all nearby enemy targets to the caster.
* Thundering Stomp: Stomp the ground, dealing Physical damage to enemies in a large area and knocking them into the air. On heroic, this ability also slows your movement speed for five seconds.
* Summon explosives: Drakos summons a bunch of bombs that scuttle along the ground and explode after a few seconds.
The tank pulls Drakos, and tanks him wherever he pleases. The healer and DPS do their thing. The bombs that scurry around do not explode upon contact or proximity, they’re just on a timer. They also do not do a lot of damage, so don’t panic. Just make sure you’re not standing near four or five of them at a time. If you’re starting to get worried, just move.
When Drakos uses Magic Pull (and he will use it often) the ranged and healer should just go back out to where they were. Thundering Stomp might make this difficult at times, but it just slows you down. It doesn’t stop you from moving entirely.
Drakos should die fairly easily, at which point your party gets to choose your drakes for the run by talking to one of the three NPCs that step out of their cages.
To sum up: Don’t panic. Tank. Spank.
Band of Acceleration
This is where the instance gets “hard” for many people. Note the quotes there. If I were saying this out loud, I would be making those obnoxious air quotes with my fingers. In reality, it’s very easy and the hardest part of it all is getting your party to stick together and move in one direction. As I said in The Queue the other day, most people who have had bad experiences with Oculus had them simply because people split up and got lost. If you think your party will need a visual aid, mark someone with a target marker (not the blue square, for the love of all things righteous) and tell everyone to follow them.
Here are your current drake abilities:
Ruby Drake:
* Searing Wrath
* Evasive Aura
* Evasive Maneuvers
Emerald Drake:
* Leeching Poison
* Touch the Nightmare
Amber Drake:
* Shock Lance
* Stop Time
The Ruby Drake is the tank, the Emerald Drake is the healer, and the Amber Drakes are DPS. In this stretch of the instance, when you’re just killing trash blue drakes flying around, it would be a good idea to learn how your abilities work together. The Ruby Drake generates a lot of threat, then avoids the damage with the second ability. The Amber Drake stops time, which applies a debuff that boosts the damage of their nuke. The Emerald Drake drains the opponents’ life and can use that to debuff the enemy.
My composition recommendation is one red, one green, and three bronze drakes. Your party may decide otherwise (especially if someone is doing achievements) and that’s fine. Any combination is workable. My recommendation is simply what I’ve found to be the easiest.
If you are not at all familiar with how these drakes work, you choose your drake by talking to the appropriate NPC. The drake appears as an item in your inventory, which you can summon and dismiss as you please. You will be using them to fly from platform to platform, kill the flying drake trash, and you will fight the final boss astride them.
Now, You want to fly straight up until you’re level with the next tier of platforms. Kill all of the blue drakes in between you and your target, the ten Centrifuge Constructs littering this tier of the Oculus. I’ve detailed on this map my recommended flight path, which will have the least resistance. You don’t need to use it, but if you’ve never done Oculus before I recommend it. Once you’ve killed all ten constructs, the next boss will drop his big purple shield and you can go shiv the poor guy.
Varos Cloudstrider is one of those bosses that players die to constantly for no good reason at all. A couple of things tend to go wrong with this guy.
1. Groups pull Varos before killing the blue drakes above him. The drakes aggro onto someone when you pull Varos, and suddenly you have to deal with a pissed off blue dragon without the help of your own dragons. To avoid this, just kill everything around his platform. If you neglect to kill them all and you do get an add, a death knight can Death Grip the drake down into melee range if you happen to have one in your party.
2. Players stand right in Varos’s only dangerous ability: Energize Cores. It’s a cone attack that is displayed in the video you will see in just a moment.
Varos’s other abilities:
* Amplify Magic: Increases magic damage taken by up to 1800 and healing by up to 3600. Can be dispelled.
* Summon Azure Ring Captain: Varos calls for help, and a drake shoots a laser beam down on your party. Just move out of the way of the laser.
Pull Varos, move out of his cone, move out of the laser, dispel Amplify Magic if you’re able. That’s the entire fight. To see the cone and the laser in motion, simply watch the video below.
To sum up: Take one red drake, one green drake, three bronze drakes. When you reach Varos, stay out of the laser cone, don’t stand in the sky laser.
Band of Transmutation
Once Varos is dead, you want to fly straight up until you’re level with the next tier, just like last time. Now you’re chasing down Mage-Lord Urom. The type of movement you want to use here on your drakes can be seen on this map, though which platform is your starting point doesn’t really matter. Approach Urom, he’ll chicken out and leave you with some magical constructs, which you can dispatch pretty easily. Repeat this on the next two platforms, and then he’ll appear down on the center area of the big sparkly tower.
Mage-Lord Urom is incredibly simple for a group of primarily ranged DPS, and a bit harder for pure melee.
His abilities are:
* Frostbomb: Launches a Frostbomb that deals Frost damage and freezes the ground, dealing periodic damage and slowing the movement speed of enemies in an area. Urom uses this on the tank.
* Time Bomb: Deals 4560 to 5040 Arcane damage and plants a time bomb in an enemy target. After 6 seconds the bomb explodes, dealing additional Arcane damage to nearby enemies equal to the amount of health missing from the target.
* Empowered Arcane Explosion: Sends out a blast wave of magic, inflicting Arcane damage to nearby enemies.
If you have primarily melee DPS, your healer will need to put some effort into keeping them all alive through the stacking Frostbomb debuff. The tank can pull Urom out of the AOE, but he uses it frequently enough that you’re probably not going to be out of the first one before he drops another one. Ranged DPS don’t even need to worry about it.
Time Bomb is non-threatening if your healer is on the ball. If your healer is falling behind, it gets more and more dangerous as everyone’s health gets progressively lower.
Empowered Arcane Explosion (with its 6 second cast time) is the ability that tends to murder people. When Mage-Lord Urom teleports to the very center of the Oculus, your job is to get out of line of sight. If you look around the area before pulling Urom, you’ll notice there are a few pillars at regular intervals around the ring. If you try to tank Urom near one of those, you can just scurry behind it when he teleports and you will never be hit by the Arcane Explosion.
If you’re not mindful of where he’s being tanked, you might get caught with your pants down in the middle of a Frostbomb, totally unable to reach a column before he finishes casting. That’s bad, so just pay attention to where you are.
Of course, all of this is completely moot if your group is extremely well geared. Especially if you have a shaman. Pop Bloodlust/Heroism, your group goes crazy on Urom, and you will probably kill him before he even teleports once.
To sum up: If your group is poorly geared, try to move Urom out of the frost on the ground so the DoT doesn’t murder your melee. If you’re well geared, it doesn’t even matter and this is just a tank and spank. When Urom teleports to the middle, stand behind a column to avoid the incoming damage.
Band of Alignment
Once you’ve killed Urom and looted his bloodied corpse, it’s time to learn another ability or two on your drake, as their true potential has completely randomly and arbitrarily unlocked.
Ruby Drake:
* Martyr: Redirect all harmful spells cast at friendly drakes to yourself for 10 sec. When combined with Evasive Maneuvers, the tank essentially gets to pull damage away from everyone else and then avoid it himself.
Emerald Drake:
* Dream Funnel: Transfers 5% of the caster’s max health to a friendly drake every second for 10 seconds as long as the caster channels. Use this to heal your party members. Since it’s draining your health to heal them, you’ll want to keep three stacks of your Leeching Poison on the boss at all times.
Amber Drake:
* Temporal Rift: Channels a temporal rift on an enemy dragon for 10 sec. While trapped in the rift, all damage done to the target is increased by 100%. In addition, for every 15,000 damage done to a target affected by Temporal Rift, 1 Shock Charge is generated. Essentially, you want to channel this spell until you see 10 Shock Charges on the boss. When it hits 10, use your Shock Lance to use it up for a great, big nuke. Repeat until boss is dead.
The next boss, Ley-Guardian Eregos, is directly above you. It is the first and only boss you actually fight astride your drakes. If you need to practice your new abilities you should do so on the whelps in your way up to him before it’s too late.
When pulling Eregos, try to do so starting at one of the three platforms rotating around his tier. Wait for him to come around to where you are, and have your Ruby rider start nuking away at him to build threat. Eregos’s basic offensive abilities are very straightforward nukes, so I won’t go into too much detail there. However, there are two major abilities worth noting.
* Enraged Assault: Increases damage done by 25% and casting speed by 100% for 12 seconds. When Eregos uses this, his damage output goes way up. However, an Amber Drake can use Stop Time, which will prevent Eregos from taking advantage of this buff.
* Planar Shift: At set intervals, Eregos will ‘phase out’ and become immune to damage. At this time, he will summon a few blinky orbs which will slowly move in your direction. After 18 seconds, these orbs will explode for massive damage. This is typically what wipes groups, but like Enraged Assault, completely avoidable. Following the map for this tier, your group needs to simply move to the next platform. Once there, you can just wait for Eregos to phase back in and you can let him come to you to continue the fight.
After the many nerfs to this instance, Eregos will die in no time with three Amber Drakes nuking away. Fly down to the platform that holds your loot, and don’t forget to check the chest if you ended up with Oculus via the random dungeon tool. There’s prizes waiting for you!
Dailies The Oracles : Mastery of the Crystals
Reward(s): 16g 20s and 700 Reputation for The Oracles
Pick this quest up from Oracle Soo-Dow located at the Rainspeaker Canopy (54, 53) in Sholazar Basin and head Southwest to The Mosslight Pillar (33, 76). You can find The Crystal Defenses in the Sparktouched Haven (33, 75) if you wish to use the AoE items it provides, but it seems quicker to just kill the required fifty Frenzyheart yourself, the mobs can be found to the West in Kartak’s Hold (23, 83). When you’re finished, go to Lightningcaller Soo-met located in the Sparktouched Haven (33, 74) for your reward.
Dailies The Oracles : Will of the Titans
Reward(s): 16g 20s and 700 Reputation for The Oracles
Acquire this quest up from Oracle Soo-Dow located at the Rainspeaker Canopy (54, 53) in Sholazar Basin and head Southwest to Kartak’s Hold (25, 80). To maximize your profit, ignore the vehicle aspect of this daily quest and kill any fifty of the nearby Frenzyheart mobs with your own abilities. When you don’t use the optional ‘vehicle’, you are able to loot the slain Frenzyheart for their silver and vendor items which drop. When you’re done, go to Lightningcaller Soo-met located in the Sparktouched Haven (33, 74) for your reward.
Crusade Argent Daily : Slaves to Saronite
Reward(s): 13g 23s and 250 Reputation for The Argent Crusade
Pick up this daily from the respective NPCs in Icecrown – Horde: Brother Keltan on board the Ogrim’s Hammer airship, which patrols from 69, 51, to 68 ,26, and finally to 60, 32 before returning to its starting position; Alliance: Absalan the Pious on board the Skybreaker, which patrols from 64, 56 to 56, 37 (If you don’t want to waste time flying around Icecrown, talk to Horde: Sky-Reaver Klum @ 69, 41, or Alliance: Officer Van Rossem @ 67, 46 in Dalaran for a direct flight to the appropriate airship). Fly to the Saronite Mines in Ymirheim (56, 57) and speak with the Neutral workers there until you get credit for ten rescued slaves. Some may jump further down the mine to their assumed deaths, while others may become enraged and attack you. Once all the slaves are rescued, return to your faction’s quest giver aboard the airships.
Guide included! Cooking 1-350 with Pilgrim!
Just follow this step-by-step guide and you got it! Note that this is form a horde POV, the alliance is very similair just with different names. If your looking for a spice that you cant find then mouseover it and it will usually tell you wheres its sold. Like “Sold by the Pilgrim’s bounty vendor in Mulgore”
STEP 1: Talk to the cooking trainer (there’s one available right outside Orgrimmar for the event) and learn the Spice Bread recipe — buy the needed Simple Flour and Mild Spices (sold by the Pilgrims Bounty ingredient vendor nearby), and cook at least 80 bread. The recipe turns gray at 40, but don’t worry about that — be sure to save all the bread you make, as you’ll need it for the next step.
STEP 2: Go to a Pilgrim’s Bounty recipe vendor and purchase the Bountiful Cookbook for 1 silver, and in it you’ll find the Spice Bread Stuffing recipe — learn it, buy Autumnal Herbs, and make the stuffing until you get to 100. Reminder: When you reach 50, go back to your cooking trainer and get Journeyman in cooking so you will continue leveling to 100.
STEP 3: Learn the Pumpkin Pie recipe, buy ripe pumpkins and Honey, and make the pie until you get to 160. (Note: The necessary Ripe Trisfal Pumpkins are only available from a Pilgrim’s Bounty vendor outside Undercity.) Reminder: When you reach 125, go back to your cooking trainer and get Expert in cooking so you will continue leveling past 150 and up to 160.
STEP 4: Learn the Cranberry Chutney recipe, buy tangy cranberries and honey, and make the chutney until 220. (Note: The Tangy Southfury Cranberries required for the recipe are only available from a Pilgrim’s Bounty vendor outside Orgrimmar.) Reminder: When you reach 200, go back to your cooking trainer and get Artisan in cooking so you will continue leveling past 225 and up to 300.
STEP 5: Learn the Candied Sweet Potato recipe, buy the sweet potatoes, honey, and autumnal herbsand make the potatoes until 280. (Note: The Mulfore Sweet Potato required for the recipe are only available from a Pilgrim’s Bounty vendor inside Thunder Bluff. Be sure to get extra sweet potatoes here, as you’ll need them for step 6 also.) Reminder: When you reach 275, go to your cooking trainer in Outlands and get Master in cooking so you will continue leveling past 300.
STEP 6: Learn the Slow-Roasted Turkey recipe, buy the sweet potatoes, and honey, kill Wild Turkeys until you have enough whole turkeys, and cook until you get to 350. (Note: Wild turkeys required for this recipe are only found in Tirisfal Glades.)
I estimate this will cost under 10g, significantly cheaper and easier than leveling your cooking under the usual circumstances.
Leveling Shaman Guide: From Scarlet Monastery to Outland
* It is this writer’s opinion that these are the levels that really define your spec and role. It’s in the 40’s that you can actually have enough talents and have trained enough skills that the real potential of each spec comes through: your elemental shaman actually feels and plays significantly differently than your dual wielding enhancement shaman, and while both can still heal, resto really starts pulling ahead here.
This week we’re going to continue the leveling with coverage of going from level 41 (so actually a little beyond SM, but “Razorfen Downs to Outland” or “Uldaman to Outland” didn’t really have the same zing) to level 68, which is the level at which you can board the boat to Northrend. Some basic things to consider before getting to the meat of things.
* Shamans were originally designed as ‘offensive hybrids’ to balance out the paladin’s ‘defensive hybrid’ nature. Since shamans and paladins are no longer designed in opposition those roles have blurred somewhat, but elements of the original intent still show through. Keep in mind that two of the three shaman trees are DPS oriented, and at these levels the fact that one is a ranged DPS while the other is melee will not seem as distinctive as those roles become in raiding/instancing.
* Gear will start to drop in Outland that is more optimal for individual shaman specs. Before then, mail with spell power and/or MP5 is still somewhat rare on the ground in Azeroth outside of the various instance blues that drop. You’re just going to have to work around it, annoying as it is.
* Shamans are pretty bloody flexible. I have a friend (Hi Will) who has leveled an orc shaman to 80 as resto, and is working on an alliance shaman as well. Again as resto. And he kills things just fine. It’s slower, yes, but it can work, so if you have a spec you really like don’t despair of leveling with it as a shaman.
Okay, now to talk about what you’ll be doing for 28 levels.
The basics of leveling advice is still the same… if this is an alt get it as many heirlooms as you can swing for the XP boost and to avoid having to think about gear upgrades (although it is kind of a bummer when a really nice piece of gear drops and you don’t have any use for it because you’re using an heirloom, but no gift without price, right?) and if you can, run the instances, especially if you don’t have heirlooms. Back when the general revamp to instances went live, a lot of gear that was just kind of ‘meh’ for shamans got changed to actual be decent. Examples include the Deathchill Armor from Razorfen which is a decent piece for a resto shaman at that level or the Gahz’rilla Scale Armor from ZF.
I know that instances can be hard to get groups for when you’re leveling nowadays. I have hopes that the new cross-realm LFG system will help alleviate this to some extent, and running instances (especially ones that you can gather a whole lot of quests for, likeUldaman, Zul’Farrak, the Temple of Atal’Hakkar and Blackrock Depths) can really help you tighten up what you’re expected to do in an instance as you progress in levels. Another way to ’stress test’ yourself as well as get XP is in the Battlegrounds, especially now that XP gain is allowed there. If you lack the patience to wait for LFG, just don’t want to run the same instance over and over again but are perfectly willing to kill the same Alliance/Horde players time in and time out, or want to see what a raid interface looks like (since most BG’s use one) then BG leveling is definitely a strong option.
Once you hit Outland, instances become an even more tempting way to get some decent gear if you can arrange it. Also, although it’s not as much fun as running a full group, do not be afraid to accept when a bored level 80 guildmate offers to run you through the entirety of Coilfang Reservoir. People will tell you that this isn’t really in the spirit of things, and they’re right, but until that new LFG functionality arrives let us be honest among each other: getting lower level instance runs is harder now. You can still get decent XP and some nice gear in an afternoon of your Ulduar/TotC geared buddy showing off just how much damage Blizzard does, so don’t close your mind to the option. When I run a lowbie friend or friend’s alt through an instance, I try and get as many of them as I can in to spread out the gear drops, but you’ll figure out how it best works for you. If you have a lot of lowbie friends, you can always try and run the instance the way it was meant to be run.
If all else fails and you hate instances and BG’s, there’s always the tried and true questing through zones. There’s actually quite a few zones available to you and if that’s the road you choose, it will absolutely work just the same as it did before. In fact, I’ve found that Outland in general goes pretty quickly since patch 3.0 dropped. You can easily do nothing but zone quests, and be level 64 (with rested and heirlooms, possibly 65) before you even finish up whichever zone you pick after Hellfire Peninsula. If you hit Nagrand as soon as it’s available, you could very easily ding 67 or 68 by the time you’re done, meaning that (if you choose to) you can skip Shadowmoon Valley, Blade’s Edge Mountains and Netherstorm entirely.
Between level 41 and 68 you’ll gain a few new non-talented abilities. You picked up Chain Heal at 40, and you’ll be gaining Call of the Spirits at 50, your third totem bar allowing you to drop four totems at once. From there you’ll get the next big totem, Wrath of Air, at level 64 (I personally love Wrath of Air and drop it very often when I’m healing) followed by the two pet totems, Earth Elemental Totem at level 66 and Fire Elemental Totem at level 68. While these are both fine totems (EE saved my butt the other day when we summoned the Headless Horseman before realizing the tank wasn’t actually in the instance yet, as it proved able to tank the dude for its entire duration as long as I was fast on the heals) I’ve always lamented that EE Totem doesn’t turn the shaman into an earth elemental for its duration. (That would be one way for Shamans to tank, if there was any desire for that.) Same with Fire Elemental Totem: it’s a fine totem, it does what it is intended to do, but since neither pet totem can be controlled by the shaman you always end up watching it run over and whack some mob that hit you with a spell you didn’t even notice while ten other mobs are punching you in the groin. (Assume for the same of the argument that these are short and very vindictive mobs.)
These levels are the ones where the talent trees start hitting their stride. It’s possible to have spent 31 points in a talent tree by 40, which means you’ll be able to pick up talents likeElemental Mastery, Dual Wield, or Cleanse Spirit. By level 68. you can easily have spent 51 or more talent points in a tree to pick up the capstone talents and even if you haven’t quite, a 44/15/0 build is still that of an elemental shaman. (I pulled those talent numbers out of my buttocks for illustration purposes, please don’t write in complaining that no elemental shaman would go 15 points in enhance.) It’s in Outland that you’ll fine the first mail really designed for elemental or restoration (if you just hate wearing leather or cloth) as well as spell power weapons and shield. (These things exist in Azeroth to be sure, but are far more common through the Dark Portal.)
This covers most of the basics for the new or newly leveling shaman, be he alt or new main.
Guide Hunter Leveling : Levels 41-60
Level 41-42
Now that we’re in the 40’s you’ll start to notice that you’re not really learning as many new skills now as you have in the past. Though this might not be as exciting, it doesn’t mean your character isn’t improving. For example, at level 42 you learn Rank 3 of MultiShot Volleyand Rank 6 of Serpent Sting. These are two solid skill improvements as you level up. And with the changes coming up in Patch 3.3 you’ll begin to use Volley even more as a way to burn through mobs as you search for quest objectives.
Another skill that is available to learn is Rank 2 Counterattack from the Survival Tree. If you’re using a Survival build to level or if you’re leveling through PvP, you might want to consider this talent. Counterattack is a melee ability that cannot be blocked, dodged or parried. Counterattack is good way to inflict some damage on your way back to kiting range if a warrior or rogue got too close and you’re trying to make your escape.

Level 43-44
When you get to Level 43 you’ve gone another two levels without any new skills. Instead you see upgrades to: Aimed Shot (Rank 4), Arcane Shot (Rank 6), Explosive Trap (Rank 2) andMongoose Bite (Rank 3).
Another skill that gets an upgrade is Mend Pet. With Rank 5 of Mend Pet you now get to heal your pet for 1,000 health over 15 seconds. One nice strategy is to cast Mend Pet as you start to tackle some of the higher level mobs allowing it to help mitigate or reverse some or all of the damage taken during battle. This strategy will allow you to consistently take on both regular mobs and even some of those Elites that are 1 or 2 levels above your current level.

Finally, 6 levels later we get to learn a new spell, Aspect of the Wild. This is a pretty good Aspect for 5 man instances like Maraudon or later on Dire Maul where having nature resist will be beneficial. It’s also a nice aspect to have later on when you’re running around outlands and in instances like Underbog. Then again, I’ve also heard that this helps some in PvP, but I’m sure using Aspect of the Hawk or later on Dragonhawk would be better.
Since we’ve been covering some skills that get increased, you also learn Scare Beast (Rank 3) and Immolation Trap (Rank 4).

We’re back to another dry learning period with no new skills for levels 47 and 48. You do get a pretty good boost to Aspect of the Hawk with it giving a +90 to Attack Power with learning Rank 5.
You also get the opportunity to learn Raptor Strike (Rank 7). Now the purist will say that you shouldn’t have to ever worry about learning a melee skill. Now I would agree, but I also am practical and know that any damage is good damage. So if you can get a Raptor Strike off as you get your distance and do a few extra points of damage, why not?

Level 49-50
Level 50 introduces us to a couple of new skills. First there’s Track Dragonkin. This will help you in some instances later on, but also is nice when you decide to farm Scalding Whelps for a Dark Whelping.
The other new skill is Steady Shot. This is the backbone attack of all hunters. Not that you’ll use it all the time, but it’s the shot you go to when everything in your rotation is on cooldown. It also is a good gauge for when you’ve reached your soft haste cap. You can tell this when your casting time for Steady Shot equals the Global Cool Down of 1.5 seconds.
Besides these new skills you also learn Serpent Sting (Rank 7), Wyvern Sting (Rank 2), andVolley (Rank 2).
